Novena  for Marriage renewal - Wednesday 24th July: Patience

Sign of the Cross

The Lord's prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Doxology

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they will be created. And you will renew the face of the Earth.

Reading

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the Earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You, too, must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.

(James 5:7-8)

Meditation

Don't be too quick to get angry when you disagree or your spouse does something you don't like. Give it time to see if it's a simple misunderstanding or something that needs to be discussed further when you are calm. l've realized that sometimes if I wait to respond when I feel offended, it works out on its own.

If you know you struggle with impatience but aren't sure what to do, take a few days to actively take stock of when you feel impatient with your spouse.

  • Are there particular times of day, like when you're trying to get ready to leave for work?

  • What can you do to make those situations less frustrating?

Maybe you just need to make your lunch at night and have your bag packed and ready to go. Thinking through what triggers impatience helps us see that the problem isn't our spouse, it's usually us.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."

- Galatians 6:9

"Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools."

- Ecclesiastes 7:9

Prayer for the Marriage renewal

Father in Heaven, You called Louis and Zélie Martin to holiness through their married life. You gave them as Mother and Father to St. Therese of Lisieux. Through their intercession, we ask you to bless the married couples of our diocese and those who are preparing for marriage. Bless our children and our grandchildren. Guide us by your Holy Spirit to bear witness in our lives to the beauty of the Sacrament of Marriage. Guide us as citizens to make the kind of decisions that will support family life, protect marriage and respect the dignity of children. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord.Amen.
