Dear Parish Family,

This weekend’s Gospel recounts the extraordinary moment when Jesus calls Simon Peter to follow Him. In that pivotal encounter, Peter experiences both his own unworthiness and Christ’s abundant grace. Similarly, this past month has been a time of encountering God’s grace in abundance, made manifest through the incredible hospitality and kindness of our parish.

Throughout January, our parish had the joy of welcoming 16 of my brothers from the Community of St. John. Many of them travelled from as far as Taiwan and the Philippines to be here with us. It was a significant moment for our community as they were able to witness first-hand the life and vibrancy of Holy Family Parish.

During their visit, we engaged in a session on evangelisation in the parish setting, celebrated a special Mass with Bishop Michael and Bishop John Adams, and dove into the rich theology of Henri de Lubac. In addition to these moments of formation and prayer, we also took time to explore some of the beautiful landscapes of Aotearoa.

I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the warm and generous welcome you extended to my brothers. Your kindness shone brightly, whether it was by providing meals, lodging, transport, or simply taking part in the life of the parish during this time. A special thanks to everyone who contributed to the big parish potluck—it was a wonderful evening of fellowship and joy.

The spirit of hospitality and community that you demonstrated was a true reflection of the Gospel. It reminded me of St. Peter’s response to Jesus, as he left everything to follow Him. Likewise, you gave generously of your time and resources, opening your hearts and homes in a beautiful act of service and love.

As we move forward into the year, may the example of St. Peter inspire us all to deepen our trust in Christ and to answer His call with courage and generosity. Let us continue to build on this spirit of welcome and joy, making our parish a place where everyone feels at home and where Christ is encountered in profound ways.

Thank you again for making January such a special month for our community. May the Lord bless you abundantly for your kindness and faithfulness.

In Him,

Fr. Michael Therese

P.S. Please take a moment to enjoy the photo of our community, taken after the Mass with the bishops and all the brothers and priests—it is a wonderful reminder of this blessed time together.
